Does Medicare Cover Home Health Care for ALS? - Trusted Senior Specialists

Medicare coverage was created with a variety of diagnoses in mind. One of those diagnoses is ALS. Medicare covers home health care in a variety of situations, with the only stipulation being that a doctor must verify the service is medically necessary. All of the services, treatments, and equipment covered by Medicare must meet this qualification.

Medicare does not typically cover home health services 24 hours a day for 7 days a week. If you’re in need of some respite care or would benefit from having a home health care worker in your home occasionally, consider Medicare as a source of funding.

Medicare Is Available for ALS Patients Who Are Under 65

ALS is one of the conditions that allow individuals to enroll in Medicare early. If you have been recently diagnosed with ALS, know that Medicare can provide the funding necessary to gain access to things that will improve your life. One of the things that can make a huge difference is home health care. Home health care can vary but exists to make the home environment a safe place to rest and remain. Home health care enables many to stay in a comfortable environment without needing admission to the hospital.

Home Health Care Covered Through Medicare

In order to have Medicare cover your home health needs, there are certain qualifications that must be met. Your doctor must agree that the services provided are necessary, as you are required to be homebound and in need of home health care services. The care provided also must be intermittent. This is defined as needing care less than 7 days a week, for fewer than 8 hours per day, during a period of 21 days or less.

The home health care agency used must be approved by Medicare in order for its coverage to extend. This is important, as those health providers will know what services are covered by Medicare and which ones aren’t. It’s extremely necessary to keep your coverage in mind throughout the home health care process, as you may need to pay out-of-pocket if a service is used and not covered by your Medicare policy.
