Medicare Supplement Plan A

Medicare Supplement Plan A

Plan A is the most basic Medigap insurance plan. It covers coinsurance expenses associated with Medicare Part A, and it covers 365 more days in the hospital after Medicare coverage runs out. It also covers coinsurance and co-pays for Medicare Part B. Aside from that, Plan A covers the first 3 pints of a blood transfusion and coinsurance and co-pays associated with Plan A hospice care.

Medicare Supplement Plan B

Medicare Supplement Plan B

Plan B is mostly identical to Medigap Plan A. The only difference is that Plan B also picks up the hospital deductible you would owe for care covered by Medicare Part A.

*Remember that both Medigap Plan A and Medigap Plan B are Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, and they are different from ‘Part A’ and ‘Part B’. Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B constitute the primary coverage offered through Original Medicare.

Medicare Supplement Plan C

Medicare Supplement Plan C

Medigap Plan C is among the most comprehensive Medicare Supplements. This plan covers every out-of-pocket expense except for excess Medicare Part B charges. An important note regarding this coverage, it is only available to those who turned 65 before January 1, 2020. That is because of a law that passed saying Medigap plans can no longer pay for Medicare Part B’s deductible. It’s also important to note that this plan will cover 80% of the cost for Foreign Travel Emergencies. That’s true for every plan that includes this type of coverage.

Medicare Supplement Plan D

Medicare Supplement Plan D

Medigap Plan D is similar to Plan C. However, it doesn’t cover the deductible for Medicare Part B. Like Plans A and B, it’s important to note the distinction between Medicare Supplement Plan D and Medicare Part D. Medicare Part D is primary coverage through Medicare for prescription medications.

Medicare Supplement Plan F

Medicare Supplement Plan F

Medicare Supplement Plan F is the single most comprehensive plan available. It covers everything that would leave you with out-of-pocket expenses. That is, except for the remaining 20% of Foreign Travel Emergency coverage. Members enjoy this plan, because they are able to receive consistent health care without ever having to pay so much as a co-payment for a doctor visit.

Some states offer Medigap Plan F as a high-deductible plan. In this case, you will be responsible for the first $2,340 of out-of-pocket expenses (in 2020). After you pay that total amount, all your health care expenses for the rest of the year will be covered by Medicare Supplement Plan F.

Like Supplement Plan C, this Medigap plan is not available to anyone who turned 65 on or after January 1, 2020 because it covers Medicare Plan B’s deductible.

Medicare Supplement Plan G

Medicare Supplement Plan G

Medigap Plan G is similar to Plan F. The only difference is that Plan G does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible. Even still, the premium for Medigap Plan G is often significantly lower than it is for Plan F. Therefore, members sometimes wind up paying fewer annual expenses for Plan F – even after factoring in the deductible for Medicare Part B. Also like Plan G, Plan F has a high deductible option. The maximum deductible for Medicare Supplement Plan F is $2,340 for 2020.

This is the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement now that Plans C and F are not available to people turning 65 on or after January 1, 2020.

Medicare Supplement Plan K

Medicare Supplement Plan K

Medigap Plan K covers everything besides Medicare Part B deductible, Medicare Part B excess charges, and Foreign Travel Emergencies. While this plan covers 100% of Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital expenses, it only covers 50% of all other items included in its coverage. On the flip side of that, there is an annual out-of-pocket limit of $5,880. Once that limit is reached, all other out-of-pocket expenses are covered in full.

Medicare Supplement Plan L

Medicare Supplement Plan L

Medicare Supplement Plan L is the same as Medigap Plan K, except it covers 75% of the items included in its coverage plan. The annual out-of-pocket limit for Medigap Plan L is $2,940.

Medicare Supplement Plan M

Medicare Supplement Plan M

Medigap Plan M covers the same items as Plans K and L, and it also includes 80% of Foreign Travel Emergencies. It also covers 100% of every item included in its coverage besides Medicare Part A deductible. It only covers 50% of the deductible for Medicare Part A.

*Medigap Policies K, L, and M are not always available in every state. If you are interested in one of these plans, check for availability with your local health insurance provider.

Medicare Supplement Plan N

Medicare Supplement Plan N

Medigap Plan N is almost identical to Plan M. The only difference is that it covers 100% of Medicare Part A deductible. Even though Plan N covers 100% of Medicare Part B coinsurance, you still may be responsible for a co-payment of up to $20 for certain office visits. You also may pay up to $50 for emergency room visits if you are not admitted to inpatient as a result of your visit. This plan has a very low monthly premium and is an attractive option for members who don’t require frequent doctor visits.
