Your No-Nonsense Guide to the Medicare Annual Election Period

Let’s face it: navigating healthcare coverage can sometimes feel like trying to read a foreign language without a dictionary. But if there is one time of year you absolutely need to tune in, it is right now.

The Medicare Annual Election Period (AEP) is officially open!

Whether your health needs have shifted over the last year, your budget has changed, or you just want to make sure you are not leaving any benefits on the table, this is your golden window of opportunity. To help you navigate the process with confidence, here are the three most important things you need to know about the AEP.

1. Mark Your Calendar (The Clock is Ticking)

First things first: you need to know your deadlines. The Annual Election Period happens at the exact same time every single year—running from October 15th to December 7th.

  • The effective date: Any changes, additions, or cancellations you make to your coverage during this window will officially take effect on January 1st of the upcoming year.
  • No surprises: If you do decide to make a switch, always confirm with your insurance provider how your new plan will impact your monthly premiums or out-of-pocket costs so you are fully prepared for the new year.

2. Do Your Homework (Review Your Current Coverage)

Before you can decide where you are going, you have to know exactly where you stand. It is incredibly common for insurance providers to tweak their plans from year to year, meaning the coverage you loved this year might look a little different next year.

  • For Original Medicare: Take a few minutes to review any upcoming cost or coverage adjustments for the following year.
  • For Medicare Advantage and Part D: Keep an eye out for two very important documents in your mail: the Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and the Evidence of Coverage (EOC). These documents outline exactly what is changing with your current plan’s costs and benefits.

Don't just set these on the kitchen counter and forget them! Reviewing these documents is the best way to see how your current plan stacks up against other available options.

3. Know Your Options (What You Can Actually Change)

The beauty of the Annual Election Period is that it gives you the flexibility to pivot. If your current coverage is no longer serving you, you are not stuck. During this window, you are allowed to make several compliant changes:

  • Switch between main systems: You can move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or vice versa.
  • Shop for a new Advantage plan: You can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to a completely different one.
  • Adjust your drug coverage: You can drop or add prescription drug coverage to your Medicare Advantage plan, or switch from one standalone Part D Prescription Drug plan to another.
  • Change providers: You are entirely free to sign up for a brand-new plan with a completely different insurance provider if you find a better fit.

The Bottom Line

Your health coverage should work for you, not the other way around. Since the Annual Election Period is currently open, take an hour this week to review your documents, assess your healthcare needs, and explore your options.
