Your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) and What It Means for You

Your Medicare Plan is Changing: Why You Need to Read Your ANOC

If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan, keep an eye on your mailbox this month. Sometime before the end of September, you'll receive a crucial document called the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC.

An ANOC is a notice that your plan sends you every year to inform you of any changes to its costs, benefits, or service area. These changes will take effect on January 1st of the following year. Even a small change can have a big impact on your healthcare and your wallet.

For example, your plan might be dropping a doctor you see, or a medication you rely on may no longer be covered. That's why it's so important to review your ANOC carefully and make sure your plan will still meet your needs.

What to Do After You Read Your ANOC

Once you've reviewed your ANOC, you have a decision to make. Even if there are no major changes to your current plan, it’s still smart to compare it with other options during the upcoming Annual Election Period (AEP). The AEP is the one time of year when you can switch your plan without needing a special circumstance.

This period runs from October 15th to December 7th every year. Any changes you make will be effective on January 1st.

During the AEP, you can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan.

  • Change from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare.

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.

  • Enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan.

  • Change from one Part D plan to another.
