Who Can I Contact to Report Medicare Fraud? - Trusted Senior Specialists

The first step in making sure this never happens to you is knowing what to look out for. Medicare fraud is too common and it is easy to miss the signs if you’re not familiar with their deceptive tactics. Con artists want to take your information out from under you so they can use your hard-earned income for their selfish purposes. Report these people immediately. This section will first cover the red flags, how Medicare agents differ from scammers, and finally, how you can take action to prevent their dishonesty from ruining anyone else’s finances.

Red Flags

Scammers impersonate Medicare representatives and immediately pry for personal information.

The following are examples of “reasons” they need your information:

  • Telling you about something they’re selling
  • Promising you’ll have an amazing deal, but you can’t get it unless you give them your Medicare number first
  • They’re calling to enroll you in Medicare

The above are examples of what scammers do over the phone. Con artists sometimes use home visits as a means of making others Medicare fraud victims.

Medicare vs. Scammers

Understanding how Medicare agents work is equally instrumental in detecting fraud.

Medicare differs in that:

  • Medicare will never, ever initiate the call to get you to enroll in Medicare
  • Medicare agents won’t ask you for your Medicare card number
  • Agents will never visit your home

Medicare provides the Medicare Summary Notice, which documents what has been charged to your account along with the corresponding dates.

Keep your Medicare Summary Notice if you notice there’s a service listed that you did not get. At this point, you may feel as though you’re too late in reporting the fraud. It’s not too late, and further down this page lists what you need to file a report and who to contact.

Have These in Hand Before Reporting

A detailed report will be more likely to catch the con artist. Preparation is key.

Have these ready:

  • Your Medicare card number
  • Any and all identifying information regarding the provider
  • (If you are reporting a suspicious item on your Medicare Summary Notice) – the item and its corresponding date, and how much Medicare paid. Also include the Medicare Summary Notice date

If you have Original Medicare:

  • Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227)
  • For the TTY – 1-877-486-2048

If you have Medicare Advantage:

  • Call 1-877-7SAFERX (1-877-772-3379)
