What If You Can't Afford Health Insurance? - Trusted Senior Specialists

If you can’t afford traditional health insurance, you may be wondering what your options are. Having health insurance is important, so know that there are ways to still get coverage and access to medical treatment. Even if you don’t have health insurance, you should still seek emergency medical care if needed.

Medicaid

If you can’t afford health insurance, consider checking your eligibility for Medicaid. This form of health insurance is similar to Medicare, though Medicare is typically for seniors. Medicaid is for all ages and eligibility is primarily determined by financial status. The rules for Medicaid eligibility can vary depending on the state. Medicaid is both a federal and state offering, so the details can vary depending on location.

Medicaid is intended for those who couldn’t otherwise purchase health insurance, so it’s an extremely affordable option. When selecting healthcare providers, make sure that they accept Medicaid and are approved. By doing this, you’ll minimize the amount you need to pay out-of-pocket.

Short-Term Health Insurance

Short-term health insurance can be an extremely affordable option. It’s excellent for those who will be able to afford health insurance in the future but are looking for another option before then. Short-term health insurance will provide very clear coverage for a time period that’s decided upon when the policy is bought.

Short-term health insurance is typically intended for emergency situations. It’s not meant to be a permanent form of insurance, so it doesn’t include the coverage that a typical health insurance policy does.

It’s impossible to be turned down from purchasing a short-term health insurance policy based on your medical history. While there are some types of insurance that don’t allow the provider to turn down individuals, this is not one of those. If you are turned down based on medical history, consider going to different providers, as they may have different qualifications or guidelines.
