What Are the Benefits of Having Vision Insurance? - Trusted Senior Specialists

Do you fit into the 71% of people who wear glasses? What about the 22% who wear contacts?

If you fit into either (or both) of these groups, you’re going to need routine eye appointments, which may even lead to you needing further examinations, or updates in your lenses, or surgery. In the absolute worst case scenario, you could develop a degenerative eye disease.

Vision insurance benefits are apparent on multiple fronts, namely enrollment, costs, and coverage.

Easy Enrollment

One quality that makes vision insurance stand out from the rest is that pre-existing conditions won’t disqualify you from obtaining a policy. This is a major benefit, as the same can’t be said for the majority of other insurance policies. And it doesn’t even count against you. You won’t be paying extra just because of eye health issues that you suffered prior to enrollment.

Enrollment sources are diverse, too. You can get vision insurance independently, through an employer, or it may already be included in your health insurance plan. This is a common add-on if you have indemnity health insurance, Health Maintenance Organization plans, or Preferred Provider Organization plans.

This then leads to the next facet of what makes vision insurance appealing – the costs.

Low Costs

Vision insurance premiums pale in comparison to standard health insurance premiums. One person can get a policy that has premiums anywhere between $5 and $15. If that person wishes to include his or her spouse or child, then the premium will be even lower when comparing the costs per person.

If you get this policy from an employer, you can sign up for a vision insurance plan, but you may have to pay a one-time enrollment fee. Even with this, vision insurance is competitively affordable.

Overall Coverage

Your coverage is whatever you need it to be. If you rarely see an optometrist or ophthalmologist, then a basic coverage plan will be best for you. At the most basic level, vision insurance already covers dividends – glasses, eye contacts, and eye exams are at the heart of a basic plan. Depending on the policy, a monthly premium of no more than $15 with a small copay will be enough for your plan to cover these costs.

Vision insurance gives you another choice, and that is comprehensive coverage. This will cover everything a basic plan would, while also at least partially covering eye disease treatment (e.g. glaucoma and macular degeneration), eye surgery, and treatment for permanent vision impairment.

And if you already have health insurance, even better. Add a vision insurance policy to the health insurance you already have, and you’ll pay less for eyecare than you ever did before.
