The ABCs (and D) of Medicare- Understanding Your Healthcare Coverage Options - Trusted Senior Specialists

Understanding the differences between Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D is important for many Americans who want to ensure they have access to quality healthcare as they age. In this blog, we’ll explore the basics of each part of Medicare and what they cover, as well as the costs associated with each part.

Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A covers hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, and hospice care. There are costs associated with Medicare Part A, including deductibles and coinsurance. However, for many beneficiaries, Part A is premium-free.

Medicare Part B covers medical services such as doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services. Part B has premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance. The cost of Part B is based on income and can vary from year to year.

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage, is a type of health insurance offered by private insurers that covers everything in Original Medicare (Parts A and B), and often includes additional benefits like vision, dental, and hearing coverage. Medicare Advantage plans have different costs and benefits than Original Medicare, and may have limited provider networks.

Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs, including both brand-name and generic drugs. Part D has premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance, and also includes a “donut hole” coverage gap where beneficiaries pay more for their prescription drugs before catastrophic coverage kicks in.

Additional considerations

While Medicare covers a wide range of healthcare services, it does not cover everything, including vision, dental, and long-term care services.
