Why the FDA’s Historic New Sunscreen Approval Is the Biggest Skincare News in Decades

If you have ever bought sunscreen abroad in Europe, Asia, or Australia, you might have noticed something frustrating. Sunscreens overseas often feel lighter, rub in faster, and seem to offer incredible protection without that heavy, sticky feeling. Meanwhile, back home in the United States, our sunscreen aisles have looked exactly the same for over two decades.

That just changed in a historic way.

On June 9, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially expanded the nation’s over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen monograph to include a game-changing chemical filter: bemotrizinol (also known as BEMT).

This marks the first time the FDA has introduced a new sunscreen active ingredient to the American public since the late 1990s. Here is everything you need to know about this major milestone, why it matters for your health, and when you can finally buy it.

What is Bemotrizinol (BEMT)?

Bemotrizinol is an organic (chemical) UV filter that has been used safely across Europe and Australia under trade names like Tinosorb S. In the United States, it will make its debut under the brand name Parsol Shield, manufactured by DSM Nutritional Products.

The FDA’s new regulation officially permits bemotrizinol to be formulated into U.S. sunscreens at concentrations up to 6%. After a rigorous, updated review process, the agency has designated it as "Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective" (GRASE) for adults and children aged 6 months and older.

Why Bemotrizinol is a Massive Upgrade for Your Skin

To understand why dermatologists are celebrating this news, you have to look at the limitations of current American sunscreens.

Right now, U.S. sunscreens are divided into two categories: mineral blockers (like zinc oxide) which sit on top of the skin, and chemical filters (like avobenzone) which absorb UV light. While they work, they have long-standing drawbacks. Bemotrizinol effectively solves the biggest complaints we have had about sun protection for years.

1. True Broad-Spectrum Protection

Ultraviolet light comes in two dangerous forms: UVB rays (which cause visible sunburns) and UVA rays (which penetrate deeper, causing premature aging, wrinkles, and skin cancer).

While American sunscreens are great at blocking UVB rays, our options for blocking UVA rays have historically been very limited. Bemotrizinol bridges that gap beautifully, providing powerful, comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays simultaneously.

2. Incredible "Photostability" (It Doesn't Break Down)

Have you ever wondered why you have to reapply sunscreen so often? Some traditional chemical filters, like avobenzone, are unstable. When sunlight hits them, they actually begin to degrade and lose their effectiveness.

Bemotrizinol is highly photostable. It does not easily break down when exposed to intense sunlight. This means the level of protection stated on your bottle is much closer to the steady, reliable defense your skin actually receives throughout a long day outdoors.

3. It Barely Absorbs Into the Body

In recent years, safety discussions have popped up regarding how much older chemical sunscreens absorb through the skin and into the bloodstream. The FDA's scientific review of bemotrizinol brought excellent news: it shows incredibly low levels of skin absorption, making it an exceptionally safe profile for daily use.

Goodbye White Cast: A Victory for Inclusive Skincare

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of bemotrizinol is how it looks and feels on the skin.

To get strong UVA protection in the U.S. today, many consumers rely on mineral ingredients like zinc oxide. While zinc is highly effective, it is notorious for leaving a chalky, ghost-like "white cast" behind. For people with medium to dark skin tones, this makes many effective sunscreens practically unwearable.

Because bemotrizinol is an oil-soluble organic filter, it dries completely clear.

It rubs into the skin effortlessly without leaving a trace of white residue. This allows skincare brands to formulate products that are "cosmetically elegant"—meaning they look great, feel weightless, layer beautifully under makeup, and work flawlessly across all skin tones. When sunscreen feels good to wear, people are much more likely to use it every day.

When Can You Buy It?

Because the FDA granted the initial manufacturer an 18-month exclusivity window for the formula, you will see the ingredient launch first under specific brand rollouts later this year. Following that window, the floodgates will open for other classic American skincare brands to incorporate BEMT into their own formulas.

Expect to see a brand-new wave of incredibly advanced, clear, and long-lasting sunscreens hitting American store shelves over the next year or two.

In the meantime, don't ditch your current sun protection. The best sunscreen is always the one you actually use. But rest assured, the future of American skincare just got a whole lot brighter—and significantly more protective.
