Could Estrogen Protect You from Alzheimer’s? What New Research Says

Because of that stark statistic, researchers have spent decades trying to figure out exactly how the female brain ages and what we can do to protect it. Recently, a team of scientists at Stanford decided to look at a very specific piece of the puzzle: estrogen-only menopausal hormone therapy (MHT).
Generally prescribed to women who have had a hysterectomy, estrogen-only MHT has just been linked to a significantly reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Yes, you read that right—reduced risk.

In the past, some research did point to a higher risk of cognitive decline with hormone therapy. But clinical diagnoses of memory loss can be tricky, and early studies didn’t always paint the full picture. They relied heavily on observing symptoms rather than looking at the physical changes happening deep inside the brain.
This is where the new Stanford study, led by Dr. Hadi Hosseini, shines. Instead of just looking at memory tests, the researchers looked at the "gold standard" of Alzheimer’s evidence: autopsied brains.
By analyzing databases containing over 21,000 participants, researchers were able to literally see the amount and precise location of brain damage in women who used estrogen-only therapy compared to those who didn't.
So, what exactly did they find when they looked at those brains? The results were pretty incredible.
Alzheimer's disease leaves behind specific physical markers in the brain—namely, amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Think of these as microscopic "gunk" that disrupts how brain cells talk to each other.
The study revealed that women who had used estrogen-only therapy had a statistically significant decrease in these destructive hallmarks. The estrogen essentially seemed to help keep their brains clearer of the damage that leads to dementia.
