For many folks, basic Medicare coverage isn’t enough. Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) is extra insurance you can buy that helps fill in the “gaps.”
When it comes to choosing a Medicare Supplement plan, you have many options. There are 10 different plans, but only some offer comprehensive coverage. Those plans are C, F, G, and N. Let’s take a look at what each plan covers. You’ll find that there are not many differences between them.
Medigap Plan C
Plan C is among the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement plans. It covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency — up to plan limits — and 100% of the following:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
- Part B coinsurance and copayment
- First three pints of blood — for transfusions
- Part A hospice care
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Part A deductible
- Part B deductible
Plan C doesn’t over Part B excess charges.
Also, this plan is no longer available to people who were not eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. The reason is because Plan C coverage includes the Part B deductible, which is banned by the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization legislation.
Medigap Plan F
Plan F is the whole package. It’s the only plan that covers everything, from 80% of a foreign travel emergency to 100% of:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
- Part B coinsurance and copayment
- First three pints of blood — for transfusions
- Part A hospice care
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Part A deductible
- Part B deductible
- Part B excess charges
Like Plan C, Plan F is no longer available to people who weren’t eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020 — since it covers the Part B deductible.
Medigap Plan G
If you’re ineligible for Plans C or F, Plan G is still legit. The only item it doesn’t cover is the Part B deductible. Plan G covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency and 100 of:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
- Part B coinsurance and copayment
- First three pints of blood — for transfusions
- Part A hospice care
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Part A deductible
- Part B excess charges
Medigap Plan N
Plan N sometimes gets overshadowed by F and G. But it’s no slacker when it comes to coverage — 80% of a foreign travel emergency and 100% of:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
- Part B coinsurance and copayment
- First three pints of blood — for transfusions
- Part A hospice care
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Part A deductible
- Part B deductible
Plan N doesn’t cover the Medicare Part B deductible or excess charges.
